24 marzo 2015 - The Italian ICT market fell by 1.4 percent to reach a total market value of EUR 64.23 billion in 2014, an improvement on the previous year’s fall of 4.4 percent, according to the latest report from industry group Assinform. The result stands in sharp contrast to the global value of the ICT market, which increased by 3.6 percent last year according to the same report, demonstrating the lingering effects of the ongoing Italian recession and the widespread fall in prices.
This was above all evident in telecoms network services, which fell by 7.1 percent to EUR 23.18 billion, above all due to tariff cuts and the strong competition in the sector. The report also revealed that traditional devices and systems dropped by 0.1 percent to EUR 16.88 billion, while ICT services declined by 0.3 percent to EUR 10.22 billion. Software and ICT solutions, however, posted a 4.2 percent growth to EUR 5.70 billion.
Assinform’s study also revealed that smartphone sales continued to increase, by 14.6 percent, to 14.1 million units, albeit considerably lower than the previous year’s growth of 43.0 percent. Fixed broadband accesses rose by 2.1 percent to 14.3 million, while mobile broadband users soared by 17.8 percent to 31.7 million. As in other countries, tablet sales fell for the first, declining by 8.2 percent to 3.12 million compared to the previous year’s increase of 65.7 percent. In the ICT services segment, cloud-based technology recorded a 37.4 percent rise in value to EUR 1.04 billion.
Presenting the report, Assinform’s president Agostino Santoni said the overall signs were positive. “After more than a decade of steady reductions in investment, the data emerging from the ICT market is finally showing encouraging elements that a recovery will soon manifest itself,” he said, adding that the results in two-thirds of the market were positive, which should result in a 1.1 percent growth in the overall ICT market in 2015.
